On a clear morning in Emeryville, you can smell the aroma of fresh-baked bread at the corner of San Pablo Avenue and 43rd Street. There’s an International House of Pancakes on the corner of a plaza at that intersection and a taqueria farther down the block – but the warm, yeasty-sweet scent comes from a smaller store tucked into a tree-lined courtyard: Arizmendi Pizzeria & Bakery.

Sheana Davis, a cheesemaker from Sonoma, is offering free samples of her new blend of goat milk cheese. The stage is Rainbow Grocery, a worker-run cooperative located in San Francisco’s Mission District. Davis, who is one of the owner-workers, has been coming to Rainbow Grocery for the last 16 years. She says, “It’s a great place to launch new products.”
